SSD and SSI: Eligibility and Qualifications
To receive SSD benefits, a person must demonstrate through an application process that he or she is eligible to receive assistance and possesses a disability that qualifies him or her for relief under Social Security Administration guidelines. Eligibility requirements include a consideration of the amount and duration of payments a person has made into the Social Security Administration (SSA). After determining eligibility, the SSA will determine if a person has a qualifying disability.
In most cases, the SSA will ask if an applicant has a physical disability or mental disability that has prevented him or her from working at any job and in any profession. However, beginning at age 50, some of the requirements for receiving Social Security Disability benefits are relaxed by the Social Security Administration.
People who are not eligible to receive SSD benefits may still be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is designed for people who are in a low-income bracket and/or are not eligible for Social Security Disability (SSD).
